Rivlo: a ranked 1v1 exam-prep battle app, built solo

Designed and built a 1v1 ranked exam-prep battle app (JEE, NEET and CAT) end-to-end, from problem definition through matchmaking, adaptive learning engine and a beta release.

The problem

Exam prep is lonely and repetitive. Students grind question banks with no sense of where they stand, and practice apps don't adapt to what a student actually knows.

What I did

  • Built to beta: live 1v1 battles, daily and friend challenges, six rank tiers and a past-paper question bank, on a FastAPI backend with 30+ endpoints.
  • Designed the core adaptive learning system: subject-scoped ELO with dynamic K-factors, per-topic mastery scoring and exam-weightage-based question selection.
  • Designed topic mastery scoring that weights accuracy, difficulty, recency decay and consistency, driving which questions each player sees next.
  • Solved cold-start matchmaking with ELO-tiered bots as fallback, so users never wait for a live opponent.
  • Designed a live readiness score that combines topic coverage, mastery, ELO percentile and momentum, mapped to JEE, NEET and CAT rank bands.
  • Kept the 1,800+ question bank clean: difficulty recalibrated automatically from answer accuracy, and duplicate questions caught with embedding similarity.

Outcome

Took it from problem definition to beta: live 1v1 battles, practice paths, daily challenges and leaderboards (React Native, FastAPI, Supabase).
